A few weeks back, when it looked like TikTok was going to be inaccessible to Americans possibly forever and that somehow felt like our biggest political problem at the time, I scrambled into action one Saturday morning. I carefully pulled up my following list on TikTok and identified the 20-30 accounts I most wanted to remain connected with via (shudder) Instagram Reels. I spent several careful hours refollowing my TikTok favorites on Instagram and trying to retrain my algorithm in an attempt to replicate what I liked best about the platform, all for the app to return less than a day later.
Sure, my effort turned out to be a bit of a waste of time, but the exercise did serve as an opportunity to identify the accounts that I truly vibe with. The accounts that soothe my troubled soul. One account stood out from the rest.
