qtb mixtape #13: luck.
A collection of bops inspired by surrendering to chance.
Queering the Burbs is a distillation of pop culture, politics and queerness published twice weekly by Joe Erbentraut. This is the qtb mixtape, this newsletter’s monthly custom mix of music I’ve been vibing with for paid Queering the Burbs subscribers. Sample the flavor below and subscribe or upgrade if you’d like to check out the mixtape for yourself.

When it came time to decide on the theme for this month’s custom mixtape, I started to think a lot about superstitions.
Here I am, the first day of Mercury going retrograde, putting out the thirteenth edition of this newsletter’s monthly mixtape. At the same moment I’m writing this, I’m also lighting candles and crossing my fingers for new opportunities for growth and stability. I’m leaning into my inner woo-woo, pulling my tarot and casting my spells. I’m gazing out the window longing for the sunny days ahead. I can feel in my weary bones that change is coming, and I think it’s going to be good.
That’s just where I’m at right now. Of course, who’s to say how much of what lies ahead of us has anything to do with the thoughts we think and the actions we take today. Is it all just fate, or do we hold the key ourselves? I think the truth probably lies somewhere in between, though I’m never afraid to take the risk that I’m erring on the side of belief in manifestation and magic.
I’ve recently become newly obsessed with the brilliant Canadian singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and composer Loreena McKennitt. Though I’d encountered her music from time to time in the past thanks to it being a popular selection for figure skaters through the years, I had never really dived into her broader discography, and I’d also never seen footage of her performing her music live.
