In the words of Shania Twain, folks, it looks like we made it. Sure, as Prince famously sang, sometimes it snows in April, but for the most part I think the time has come to prepare for warmer days and outdoor hangs in the month ahead. Is there anything that hits quite like that first porch beverage with a bestie? I think not.
But before we get to the month of April, this upcoming Monday is Trans Day of Visibility and I wanted to highlight a few local events that time up rather nicely with the occasion. This Saturday, Ramshackle Farm and Woodstock Pride are co-hosting the annual Trans-farm-ation benefit punk show from 1-10 p.m. The event’s proceeds will go toward gender-affirming mutual aid support in McHenry County. And this Sunday, Elgin Pride is organizing a Trans Day of Visibility walk starting at noon at DuPage Court. Later in the day, Open Door Health Center is throwing a free Trans Day of Visibility concert from 6-10 p.m. at The Venue in Aurora (registration required).
Beyond this weekend, we’ve got a stacked lineup of queer and trans events taking place in the western suburbs and beyond in April. If I’m missing anything below—or if you’re the organizer behind any of these events and you’d prefer that they not appear here for whatever reason—please reach out by emailing me at queeringtheburbszine@gmail.com or using the button below.

SONG OF THE RIGHT-NOW
Basically the highest compliment I can ever give any new indie pop music is “wow, this kind of reminds me of the Cardigans.” Sorry kids, I’m showing my age. Anyway, that is true of “Picture Window,” a new track off Japanese Breakfast’s brand new album, For Melancholy Brunettes (and sad women). The album as a whole is honestly still growing on me, but there are a few tracks here that hit almost immediately for me. This was one of them. I love how the breezy, lush production pairs with Michelle Zauner’s voice, and the flashes of twang that twinkle in the background here and there. As a bonus, the music video is beautifully filmed.
I also really enjoyed Vulture’s new interview with Zauner, if you want a bit more of an insight into what inspired the album and how the singer-songwriter struggled with the sudden success of both her last album and book, Crying at H Mart.
Are you not afraid of every waking minute
That your life could pass you by?
But all of my ghosts are real
All of my ghosts are real
All of my ghosts are my home
This is the lord's work, my friend. What a generous offering!
